Chapter 27

This isn’t my first major challenge, Jimmy reminded himself, as he watched Garrett clicking away at his laptop keyboard. He had, after all, grown up in this country, not only as a black man, but as a gay black man. Despite the obstacles he’d faced, he got himself through law school without parents to foot the bill. Managed to get a great job and a city-wide rep based upon his writing skills and his encyclopedic knowledge of everyone in town. He’d even married a doctor. Wasn’t that supposed to be the 1950s be-all-end-all proof of social success?

He had never mastered the computer. He was functional, but nothing more. He preferred his phone—and yes, he realized that was a pocket-sized computer, but pocket-sized was all he wanted. Let Maria have the world of social media. He preferred people who were actually in the room with him. He’d text Hank in an emergency, but most of the time, he would rather be at home with his cardigans and his action figures, or acting as GM for a great session with players he could look in the eye. Cyberspace didn’t do it for him.

But after days and days of trying, he had not gotten anywhere trying to discover the meaning of the mysterious message the woman at the ropes course left him.

HONEY O’PLENTY.

What could that possibly mean? Was it a name? I mean, it couldn’t be, right? Maybe a character in a video game or a porn movie. He’d put the name into Google and gotten nothing useful. Put it into his phone. Nothing. Even managed to find a local phone book—and that took some doing—but still nothing. Was this a person? Business? Location? He didn’t know.

And while he was screwing around not getting anywhere with his only lead, Dan’s trial had begun. He needed to find out why Belasco’s dominatrix-confessor thought this might be helpful. But he had hit a dead end.

Which was what led him to do the one thing he never thought he would ever do.

He asked Garrett for help.

Not that he disliked Garrett. But Garrett was much more conservative, more reserved, more...okay, boring. Garrett was red-state conformity, and he was...something else altogether. He wasn’t even sure where Garrett stood on the LGBTQ+ issue. He certainly never acted as if he bore Jimmy any animosity. But he was such a straitlaced individual, one had to wonder.

Necessity is the mother of invention, right? Garrett was the computer whiz on this team, and he desperately needed a computer whiz. So here they were...

Garrett’s fingers moved at the speed of light. Jimmy didn’t even try to keep up. “Spend much time on the dark web, Jimmy?”

“Of course not.”

“You should.”

“Sounds appalling.”

“It’s a disgusting place. But of course, that’s why you have to go.”

“I didn’t think just anyone could visit the dark web.”

“True,” Garrett said, still clicking. “You have to know your way down the Silk Road.”

“Excuse me?”

“That was the first online black market. There are more now. Fortunately, I know them all. Tor browser makes it easier.
